BELCHERTOWN – As students were arriving to Chestnut Hill Community School Friday morning, they were ushered out of the building due to a “foreign odor in the building,” according to the school’s principal.

Belchertown Police, Fire, and Ambulance were called to the State Street school building around 8:19 a.m. for a report of smoke in the building, according to a post on the Belchertown Police Department’s Facebook page.

The school was evacuated and all arriving school buses remained in the far parking lot with the children on board,  the police department wrote. Arriving children were escorted to these buses to stay warm.

“The odor was determined to be coming from a fluorescent light in the auditorium. Everyone was safe and we were able to continue our day as usual,” Principal Jennifer Champagne wrote in an email.

Students and staff were allowed to enter the building around 9 a.m.
