Belchertown golf drops close match with Palmer

The Belchertown golf team made a late charge, but Palmer held on for a 12½-11½ victory at Quaboag Country Club in Monson, Monday.

The Panthers swept the top two positions, but the Orioles took 11½ of the next 16 points in their comeback attempt.

In match play, one point is awarded to the player with the lower score after the first three holes, the second three holes and the final three holes. A fourth point goes to the overall winner of the match.

The final three matches were close.

Joseph Mankowski gave Belchertown a 2½-1½ win over Nick Lafrennie in the sixth and final match. Mankowski and Lafrennie split the first point in the match, while Lafrennie won the third point by one shot. Mankowski (50) won the second point by two shots and the match by one.

Dan Chrzanowski split four points with Mike Bachand at No. 4 to keep the deficit at four for the O’s. Chrzanowski won the first point by one shot, while Bachand won the third point by one shot. The pair split both the middle point and the fourth point with matching scores.

Ben Anderson beat Nathan Oliveria, 3-1, to pull Belchertown within 11-9 in the fifth match. Anderson won the second point by one shot and dropped the third point by one shot, but he took the match by two strokes with a 7-over 43.

Riley Breen shot a team-best 6-over 42 and won the third match, 4-0, over Billy Partello to pull the O’s within 8-4.

Belchertown’s Ryan O’Neil shot a 45 at No. 1, but fell to medalist Ethan Beauchemin (35). Brady Perkins (52) lost at No. 2 to Lily White (44).
