Multiple Hampshire County athletes competed and had success at the annual Summer Bay State Games over the weekend.
Belchertown’s Grayson Marques, Dominic Mancuso and Joseph Bianco, along with Granby’s Liam Brown and Max Brown, were part of the silver medal-winning West boys soccer team, which won both its round-robin games before falling to Southeast/Coastal in the championship game.
Frontier’s Hannah Mackin, along with South Hadley’s Lauren Marjanski and Granby’s Dana Chateauneuf, also earned a silver medal in soccer, playing on a West squad which fell to Northeast in penalty kicks in the championship game.
The West field hockey team — which included South Hadley’s Camryn Bernier, Meghan Carey and Kaitlyn Lynes along with Belchertown’s Abigail Cramer and Holyoke’s Samantha Brennan — went 1-3 over the weekend, picking up its lone win over Southeast on Saturday.
On the ice, Frontier’s Kevin Baumann and Amherst’s Georgios Alimonos competed on the West boys hockey squad that went 1-1-1 in the tournament, beating Central, tying Metro/Northeast and falling to Central. On the girls side, Hopkins Academy’s Addison Wright, Sara Wright and Ava Hentnick played for the West team that went 0-3 in the tournament.
Frontier’s Sydney Scanlon was part of the West volleyball team that won one match over the weekend.
Infielders Mason LaPlante and Luke Franzoni, pitcher Ryan Towle and catcher Cole Andrews will represent the Valley Blue Sox on the Southern Division roster for Sunday’s NECBL All-Star Game in Newport, R.I.
The Upper Valley Nighthawks led the league with seven total All-Star selections.
Yale’s Towle is first in the NECBL with a 0.99 earned-run average. He’s 3-0 with two saves and has struck out 34 batters in 18.2 innings pitched.
Franzoni of Xavier is tied for second in the league with seven doubles and hitting .270 with 11 RBIs.
Yale’s LaPlante has 18 RBIs, ranked fourth in the NECBL. Andrews, of Miami of Ohio, has 24 hits in 22 games and has driven in 17 runs with four homers.
The final spot on each roster will be filled by a fan vote. Antonio Balducci is the Blue Sox representative on that ballot.
