HADLEY — All U.S. military veterans, their family members or caregivers or survivors are invited to a free event being planned for their benefit by the Central Hampshire Veterans Services’ District on Monday at the Hadley Senior Center, 46 Middle St.

From 4 to 6 p.m., several organizations will be on hand to explain the variety of benefits and services to which elderly veterans and their family members may be entitled to receive.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 4,000 veterans aged 65 or older live in Hampshire County. These veterans served in conflicts around the world including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and in the Persian Gulf and even in the Post 9/11 era in locations such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Sept. 9 event will address a variety of issues faced by these veterans including increased health risks as well as financial challenges in respect to long-term geriatric care.

“Elderly veterans may be eligible for a wide variety of benefits,” says Steve Connor, director of the Central Hampshire Veterans’ Services District. “More and more senior veterans are seeking our help, and we have an obligation to provide them with the information they need to make the right decisions regarding their health and well-being.”

Topics explored include geriatric programs at the local, state and federal level, such as eligibility for home-based and nursing home and residential care, caregiver support, elder legal assistance, end of life care, and burial benefits.

About a dozen presenters will be on hand, including the federal Veterans Health Administration, the Holyoke Veterans Home, Cooley Dickinson VNA and Hospice, and experts on Medicare and elder law.

Participants are asked to RSVP by calling 413-587-1299 or sending email to vetadmin@northamptonma.gov.
