HOLYOKE — Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse has been chosen as Provincetown’s next town manager.

“I look forward to accepting the position,” he said in an email Thursday evening.

The Select Board in Provincetown met at 5 p.m. to discuss naming a new town manager to succeed Robin Craver, who left after six months in the position. The board voted 5-0 to move forward with contract negotiations with Morse, he said.

“It would be an honor to take my experience and skills to a community that is a special place to me,” Morse said before the board met.

The other two finalists were Kevin Hepner, most recently vice president of administration and finance at Roxbury Community College, and Jennifer Pinck, founder of Boston-based Pinck & Co., which provides owner’s project manager services for large construction projects.

“I have always believed in the power of local government, and this potential transition would be an exciting and purposeful extension of my life’s work,” Morse said.

In his interview with the board, Morse told members his management skills have grown and his ability to recruit people has improved since being elected mayor at age 22 in 2011.

As town manager, he would empower department heads and showcase their work to the Select Board and the public.

He also told the board that he believes Holyoke voters have seen him as transparent, open and honest, and willing to admit when his judgment has been wrong.

The start date would depend on negotiations, but he is prepared to leave Holyoke before his term ends at the end of this year. Were that to happen, the council president, currently Todd McGee, becomes acting mayor until the new mayor is elected.

Morse announced in December that he would not seek a fifth term.

Morse unsuccessfully challenged U.S. Rep. Richard Neal in the September primary for the 1st Congressional District House seat.
