50 Years Ago

■Freezing, bitter winds gusting 10 to 15 mph, blinding clouds of snow against windshields, and sidewalks resembling sheets of plate glass are all in store for area residents today. Television reception was reported by some area residents to be less than perfect. Winds played havoc with the outside wires making static predominate and visibility poor.

■Northampton High School will present a stage production of James Barrie’s classic tale “Peter Pan” in February. Fifty-three students will be featured in different roles. In the role of Peter will be Bill Sackrey. Wendy will be played by Sue Packard, and Captain Hook by Joe Edelberg.

25 Years Ago

■Richard Smith, a 29-year veteran of Northampton education, will become acting principal at the Jackson Street School starting Feb. 5. Principal Philip O’Reilly’s last day is next Friday. He was recently named principal of the new Heath Elementary School.

■Northampton Superintendent Bruce E. Willard last night praised Principal Gordon Noseworthy and a committee of Northampton High School teachers for work on a proposal to change the academic schedule to four 85-minute periods a day, and a two-semester year. Having two semesters means students would take four classes the first half of the year and four more the second half.

■Dance Magazine, a trade publication for the world of dance since 1927, has included dancer Teddy Forance in its top “25 to Watch,” an annual listing of leading young dancers, choreographers and companies. Forance, 23, is the son of Alison and Ted Forance of Southampton.

■After 15 years with major labels under the Warner Music Group, Chicago-based Wilco has formed dBpm Records, which stands for “decibels per minute.” The label will feature all future Wilco recordings and will be run by the band’s longtime manager, Tony Margherita, with headquarters in the Eastworks Building in Easthampton.
