Easthampton/Orlando, MA – Robert E. Walsh Sr., Community Fixture in Easthampton and Orlando, Dies at 94
Robert E. Walsh Sr., a longtime resident of Easthampton, Massachusetts, and later Orlando, Florida, whose working life and retirement years were marked by service, faith, and an unfailing willingness to help others, died peacefully at the age of 94.
Born on May 14, 1932, in Northampton, Massachusetts, Mr. Walsh was raised in a closeknit Irish Catholic household by Denis Joseph Walsh Sr. and Margaret Richardson Glover. He attended local schools and graduated from St. Michael’s High School, where he developed the practical outlook and work ethic that would define his life. He married Elizabeth “Betty” McGrath in 1950. She predeceased him in 2002.
Together, Mr. and Mrs. Walsh raised seven children in Easthampton, a town with which his name would become closely associated: Robert E. Walsh Jr. (Mary Ellen) of Northampton, Massachusetts; Mary Harrington (Shawn) of Rocky Hill, Connecticut; Thomas Walsh (Lyn) of Chesterfield, New Hampshire; James Walsh (Colleen) of Middletown, Rhode Island; Margaret Lynch (Michael) of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; Catherine Finn of Orlando, Florida; and Maureen Fuller (the late Jeffrey Fuller) of Middleboro, Massachusetts. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Walsh began his professional life in the newspaper industry at The Daily Hampshire Gazette before joining Dow Jones & Company, Inc., publisher of The Wall Street Journal. There, he worked in the press room, supporting the high-speed printing, mailing, and distribution operations essential to daily publication. He was a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), one of the world’s oldest international labor organizations, and served as president of his local. He retired from Dow Jones in 1990.
Work, however, was never confined to a single title. For more than five decades in Easthampton, Mr. Walsh was known as someone who did whatever the community required. He drove school buses, delivered heating oil during New England winters, carried rural mail, and operated T&W Trucking, a local trash collection business. A devoted parishioner of the Church of the Immaculate Conception (now Our Lady of the Valley), he was an active member of the Holy Name Society and served for many years on the St. Patrick’s Parade Committee. He was later named the town’s Parade Marshal.
After retiring, Mr. Walsh moved to Orlando, Florida, where he settled in the Ventura community. There, as in Easthampton, he became a familiar presence. He drove his golf cart through the neighborhood, repaired what needed fixing, and was always ready to lend a hand. He enjoyed golf and bocce ball and was widely known for an easy, affiliative humor that made people feel welcome. On his 90th birthday, the Ventura community honored him with a green jacket and the affectionate title, “The Master.”
During his retirement years, he traveled with family, friends, and neighbors throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.
Robert Walsh’s life reflected enduring commitments to family, Catholic faith, steady work, and the belief that a community is built through daily acts of service. He leaves behind a large family and an even larger circle of friends and neighbors who remember him not for any single achievement, but for a lifetime of quietly showing up when he was needed.
Calling Hours for Robert are scheduled for Wednesday, August 5th from 3-6pm at the GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME, 18 Adams Street in Easthampton. A Funeral Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 6th at 10am at the OUR LADY OF THE VALLEY Parish, 33 Adams Street in Easthampton. Committal Services will follow the liturgy at Saint Brigid’s Cemetery in Easthampton. Donation’s are requested to the OUR LADYOF THE VALLEY PARISH,
