Area skiers flocked to Berkshire East Mountain Resort for PVIAC Race No. 7 in Charlemont on Tuesday and multiple athletes turned in strong performances.

Amelia Morse from Amherst and Isaac Stith from Hampshire each recorded runner-up finishes. Morse took second in the girls giant slalom race in 32.32, while Stith grabbed second in the boys slalom race in 42.03.

Other top 10 finishers were Hampshire’s Hazel Scully-Henry (fourth, 33.00), Northampton’s Greta Lepore (eighth, 34.50) in the girls’ race and Northampton’s Jonah Abel-Waisman (ninth, 48.35) and PVCICS’ James Janssen (10th, 48.90) in the boys’ race.

Local skiers will return to Berkshire East a week from Tuesday for the PVIAC Alpine Ski Individual Championships.

Girls basketball

Hopkins 24, Smith Academy 23 — The Golden Hawks squeaked past the Falcons to claim the ‘Battle of the Birds’ matchup.

Olivia Earle tallied 10 points as Hopkins’ top scorer.

Smith Academy received 12 points from Vivian Higuera in the losing effort.

Boys basketball

Smith Voc 79, Mohawk 49 — The Vikings righted the ship 24 hours after suffering their seventh defeat of the season.

Dom Sanchez was superb for Smith Voc, knocking down 32 points as the game’s highest scorer. Nate Gruszkowski (13 points), Luis Delerme (11 points) and Theo Wojcik (10 points) joined in on the scoring attack.

Boys basketball

Granby 62, Hampden Charter 59 — Zavien Fernandez paced the Rams in their come-from-behind victory.

Fernandez sank two free throws late to finish the contest with 31 points, following a a go-ahead 3-pointer from Sam Moure with 20 seconds left in regulation.
