AMHERST — Amherst is declaring an overnight parking ban beginning at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, in part to ensure the large piles of snow remaining in downtown are removed.
The ban, which will last through 7 a.m. Thursday, means a complete prohibition on parking on most streets, including Main Street from South Pleasant to Webster streets, South Pleasant Street from College to Main streets and Amity Street from South Pleasant Street to Lincoln Avenue.
Parking is also prohibited in all metered spots on North Prospect Street, Hallock Street and South Prospect Street and in all municipal lots except for the lower level of the Boltwood parking garage, the town portion of the Pray Street lot and the northern row of the town’s North Pleasant Street lot, meaning the spaces closest to the Lane Center at St. Brigid’s Church.
Town Manager Paul Bockelman said the Department of Public Works is in the process of trucking away the snow, where it will be deposited on Belchertown Road next to the transfer station.
Property owners are also reminded to remove snow and ice from sidewalks no later than 24 hours after precipitation ends and are encouraged to dig out fire hydrants near their homes with a 3-foot circle.
