I’m Tiffany Jewell. I’m running for one of the at-large School Committee positions in Northampton. I’m an educator, an author, and a caregiver of two kids in our public schools.

You might know me from my work as an educator. I worked at the Montessori School for 15 years — maybe I taught your kids or did art projects with them in the summertime. Thanks to NEF grants, I spent four years teaching preK-6th graders in our public schools about identity, justice, and activism.

You might know me from my work as an author. I write books about social justice for young folks. I wrote the first book about antiracism for kids; it was on The New York Times bestseller list for months. I even wrote a book about racism in schools because I believe in empowering young folks with truth and tools for change.

You might know me because we’ve chatted at Cooper’s, because we dance together at 33 Hawley, because our children play baseball together, or because the young person in your life shouted a “hello” from across Main Street.

You might be wondering why you haven’t seen signs with my name on them around town. I’m running a zero-waste campaign: I’ve been listening to the students in our community for years. One of their biggest concerns is climate change. I don’t want to be part of the problem. I want to be part of the solution.

You won’t see hundreds of signs with my name on them. But, you will see a few that were designed and painted by your neighbors. I won’t ask you for money because, already, way too much has been put into this election. Instead, I’m asking folks to donate to local student-centered mutual aid.

I know our schools — the classrooms, the teachers, and the learners; I will always center them in every decision I make.

I will be bold and honest. I will always fight for fair and just schools and move them into the future instead of holding them back in the past.
