Matt Vautour: Observations following UMass’ 120-71 exhibition win over AIC

Thursday, October 30, 2014

AMHERST On one hand, UMass’ 120-71 exhibition win over American International came against a Division II team that finished 9-19 last year, so it’s hard to put much stock in the dominating performance. On the other hand, the Minutemen have had some anxious moments in games like these against teams of similar ilk. Last year, UMass coach Derek Kellogg had to re-insert his starters against AIC when the game got too close. Thursday’s game was never in doubt. There was plenty of curiosity going into the game with many new players and returning players in new roles. The crowd got more than they paid for …

Freshman goalie Henry Dill off to fast start for UMass hockey team

Thursday, October 30, 2014

AMHERST — Henry Dill isn’t UMass’ No. 1 goalie. Not yet anyway. It’s too early in the season for coach John Micheletto to officially name anyone his No. 1 guy going forward. But three games into his collegiate career, Dill looks like the type of goalie who could someday earn that distinction. With good reason, it was fellow freshman Patrick Lee’s game-winning goal …

UMass coack Derek Kellogg hoping Jabarie Hinds can continue sixth man impact role.

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

AMHERST — Jabarie Hinds won’t start in UMass’ Thursday exhibition game against American International (7 p.m. Mullins Center) and probably won’t start in the Minutemen’s Nov. 14 opener against Siena. Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg liked the dynamic that …

Healthy and confident, Seth Berger competing to start for UMass

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

AMHERST — Seth Berger’s wrist is pain free and his shin is feeling much better, but the improvement in his head might be the biggest asset for the UMass sophomore forward. A year ago, the 6-foot-7 Seattle native …

Men’s basketball: UMass freshman guard C.J. Anderson making a push for playing time

Monday, October 27, 2014

AMHERST — C.J. Anderson was about a stride behind Trey Davis when he hit midcourt in a 5-on-5 drill at UMass men’s basketball practice. Anderson was on defense when a teammate deflected a pass sending the ball bouncing quickly toward the opposite end of the floor. By the …

Weekend colleges: Boston College ices UMass win streak at two games

Sunday, October 26, 2014

The UMass hockey team held No. 6 Boston College scoreless for a period and a half, but the defense cracked as BC went on for a 4-1 victory Saturday night in Boston. The Minutemen (2-3-0, 1-2-0 Hockey East) saw their two-game win streak come to an end. The …
