Linebacker Shane Huber recommits to UMass

It looks like Shane Huber is going to be a Minuteman after all.

The linebacker from Jersey City, N.J., who had re-opened his recruitment citing concerns about the University of Massachusetts’ commitment to playing Bowl Subdivision Football, announced on Twitter that he planned to become a Minuteman after all. He sent three tweets from 9:21 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday.

1. “After re-evaluating my recruitment, I have decided that #UMass is the best possible fit for me and I will be signing my LOI to Umass on feb6.”

2. “The coaching staff at #UMass is one of a kind. They have been behind me in everything I’ve done. I can’t wait to become a minuteman !!”

3. “I am officially re-committed to #UMass and will be signing my LOI on February 6th. Go Umass !!!!!!”

Huber retweeted a picture of himself wearing a UMass hat at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough with the statement “Proud to be back and apart of that family !!!” He first tweeted the picture after his initial commitment in July.

Huber’s decision to withdraw his initial commitment followed negative publicity the program received when members of faculty senate called for UMass to reverse its decision to upgrade to the Bowl Subdivision. That was followed by an article in The New York Times in which Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy made comments where he appeared to waiver on the school’s commitment to the upgrade. Subbaswamy has since released a statement confirming his support.

Because the articles came during a recruiting dead period, the UMass coaching staff couldn’t assuage his concerns.

Huber, a 6-foot-3, 223-pound linebacker, is a three-star recruit according to Scout.com. He had interest from Temple, Central Florida, Buffalo and Navy.
