Indiana high school football player suffers rare internal injury

EDINBURGH, Ind. (AP) — An Edinburgh high school student is recovering from internal injuries suffered Friday during a football game in Indianapolis.

Fifteen-year-old Steven Bailey suffered a ruptured spleen, a lacerated kidney and a punctured lung when he was tackled by Manual High School players coming from different directions.

The Daily Journal reports Bailey had lost about a quart of blood when he arrived at a hospital. He received a blood transfusion and was transferred to Riley Hospital for Children.

Coaches say internal injuries like Bailey’s are rare in football.

Bailey is expected to spend another week in the hospital and will be on bed rest after that. He’s expected to make a full recovery and return to the football field.

Edinburgh won the game, 26-12.
