As he promised shortly after being drafted, Ryan Horstman is about to start his professional baseball career.

The Seattle Mariners website reported Monday that Horstman, a left-handed pitcher from South Hadley whom the Mariners took in the fourth round of the First-Year Player Draft earlier this month, had officially signed. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.

Horstman, who starred during his only season at St. John’s, will report to the Everett AquaSox of the Short-Season Single A Northwest League.

Everett opened its season Friday and played its home opener Monday against the Tri-City Dust Devils.

It’s uncertain whether Horstman, who could not be reached for comment, would be used as a starter or a reliever when he begins his career.

Horstman, who had two years off between his senior year of high school and his freshman season at St. John’s, was draft eligible following his freshman year because he turns 21 in July. He was 6-6 with a 2.33 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 65-2∕3 innings working as a starter and out of the bullpen. His ERA was best on the Red Storm and tied for fifth in the Big East. He was named a Louisville Slugger freshman All-American.

Horstman, who led South Hadley to its first Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament championship in 2010, was slated to pitch in the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer before electing to sign.

We will always think of Ryan Horstman as "Northampton's Ryan Horstman." He went to Bridge Street School and JFK Middle School. He was a Northampton All-star Little leaguer too! We are so proud of all that he has accomplished! May the ride continue!!!

Fully agree!
