AMHERST — After pitching 13 shutout innings in a win against Palmer on Tuesday, Krystel Enko took the mound less than 24 hours later and pitched six more to give No. 6-seeded Frontier Regional a chance to reach the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament softball finals.

It wasn’t enough, however, as the Red Hawks fell 7-4 to No. 2 Wahconah in the semifinals at the University of Massachusetts. It was the second straight season Frontier fell one round short of the finals.

Enko let up seven runs (four earned) over six innings and struck out four in the loss. After the game, she brushed off any notion that fatigue was a factor in her performance.

“I pitched OK,” she said. “I was tired, sure, but we all were. That’s not an excuse.”

Wahconah (20-2) will face No. 1 Belchertown (18-4) in the finals at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sortino Field. Belchertown beat defending champion Hampshire 3-1 in the other semifinal.

Frontier coach Carrie Fydenkevez wasn’t quite ready to discount Tuesday night’s extra-inning game as a factor.

“The fatigue affected us today immensely, especially Krystel,” Fydenkevez said. “She’s a true competitor, though, and she wanted the ball.”

Frontier’s defense didn’t give Enko much help. The Red Hawks (16-7) committed five errors, including three in the first inning.

“No matter who played well for us today, we can’t get past five errors,” Fydenkevez said.

Frontier, which had 13 hits, took a 2-0 lead in the first. Junior third baseman Gwen Thayer hit a two-out single. Sophomore Ally Hamelin (four hits) followed with a single and McKayla Poissant came through with a bases clearing double.

Wahconah answered right back. After a leadoff walk and an error by Thayer at third, Warriors’ left fielder Bizzy King singled to drive in a run in the bottom of the first. With two runners on, Wahconah third baseman Bridget Lussier drove a ball to deep center for a two-run triple. Lussier then scored on a passed ball during the next at bat for a 4-2 lead. The Red Hawks committed two more errors before getting out of the inning.

“We were all pretty tired,” senior shortstop Cassidy Stankowski said. “But there is no reason at all that we should have five errors in a game.”

Stankowski provided one of the few bright spots for Frontier. With her team down 4-2 in the second inning and a runner on second base, Stankowski took Warriors pitcher Becca Grunow deep, crushing a two-run homer that hit the middle of the scoreboard over the left field wall at Sortino Field.

“That was the sweetest one I’ve hit all year,” Stankowski said. “Doing it at UMass was really cool, and it just felt good leaving my bat.”

“She’s had a couple of home runs, but that one was easily the farthest,” Fydenkevez said. “She’s a phenomenal athlete. She’s a great leader too, and an absolute pleasure to coach.”

The home run tied the game at 4-4, but Wahconah scored three in the third, including two off of a throwing error by Enko.

It was the final game for seniors Stankowski and Enko.

Courtney Newsome had three hits for the Red Hawks, and Caitlyn Sullivan also contributed a single.

“We had a great season,” Fydenkevez said. “My goal with this program each season is to bring them to UMass to play in either the semifinals or finals. So in that respect, the season was a success. I’m happy with how the girls competed.”
