Wednesday’s local colleges: UMass baseball breaks out of slump to defeat Boston College

The University of Massachusetts baseball team broke out of its offensive slump on Wednesday, defeating Boston College 11-6 and securing a berth in the 2013 Beanpot Championship game at Fenway Park on April 29.

The Minutemen’s 11 runs scored was their highest total of the season.

Trailing 4-3 after three and a half innings, UMass (5-17) took its first lead on a two-out, bases-loaded triple by Adam Picard before blowing the game open with a five-run fifth in which it sent 11 batters to the plate.

Evan Mackintosh pitched three scoreless innings in relief of starter Conor LeBlanc, allowing a hit, a walk and striking out two, to pick up the win.

Freshman catcher John Jennings led the Minutemen with three hits and an RBI, while Vinny Scifo (RBI, run) and Bryan Dionicio (2 RBIs, run) each added two hits.

UMass will face Northeastern in the Beanpot title game in Boston, after the Huskies defeated Harvard 10-2 on Wednesday.

Amherst 9, Castleton State 1 — The Lord Jeffs (13-5) had 15 hits and John Cook put up six shutout innings in the victory at Castleton, Vt.

Brendon Hardin (two runs, RBI), Taiki Kasuga (two runs, RBI) and Jonathan Ramirez (RBI) each had three hits for the Jeffs. Eric West blasted a two-run home run, while Quinn Saunders-Kolberg, Bob Cook and Conner Gunn picked up an RBI apiece.

Cook allowed just two hits in his outing with four strikeouts and only one walk.

Men’s lacrosse

Amherst 13, Springfield 12 — Kane Haffey scored two of his game-high six goals to tie the game in the fourth, then Devin Acton put in the game winner with just over a minute left in regulation for the Lord Jeffs (4-6) at home.

Acton (assist) and Dylan Park each had two goals in the win. Quinn Maroney scored a goal with three assists, while Patrick Maroney and Danny Gold added a tally apiece.

Thomas Gilligan earned the win in goal with 12 saves.

Women’s lacrosse

Mount Holyoke 16, Bridewater State 10 — Molly MacDonald scored a game-high seven goals to power the Lyons (9-2) past the Bears (10-1) at home Wednesday.

Bridewater cut the Mount Holyoke lead to 10-9 with just over 25 minutes left, but MacDonald scored three of her four second-half goals as part of a 5-0 Lyons run to take control for good.

Kirsten Kilburn scored three goals and an assist and Julia Bell added a pair of scores and assists.

Liz Malenfant made nine saves.

Connecticut College 10, Amherst 8 — Hillary Densen scored twice for the No. 10 Lord Jeffs (6-4, 3-4 NESCAC) in the loss at New London, Conn.

Mia Haughton had a goal and an assist for Amherst, while Caroline Holliday, Marta Randall, Meghan Mills, Elizabeth Paul and Sarah Spector each tallied once.

Christy Forrest made eight saves in the loss.
