Smith College basketball team’s first NCAA tourney ends in second round

The Smith College basketball team’s first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance ended Saturday with a 73-50 loss to Ithaca College in Gorham, Maine.

Amanda Zakoske led the Pioneers (23-6) with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Paulina Solis added 10 points and four steals.

Zakoske and fellow seniors Brittany Purington and Devon Quattrocchi (seven points) finished their Smith College careers with a 77-32 record.

Amherst 71, University of New England 34 — The Lord Jeffs rolled in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday at home.

Bridget Crowley scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Amherst (28-1).

Amherst will play Tufts in Holland, Mich., Friday in the sectional round.

Xavier 67, UMass 54 — The Minutewomen (3-26) concluded their season with a loss at the Mullins Center on Saturday.

Rashida Timbilla had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Minutewomen (3-26). Kim Pierre-Louis, Aisha Rodney and Nola Henry each chipped in eight points.

Tufts 53, Babson 35 — Amherst native Kristen Ferola had two points and seven rebounds in a loss in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday in Medford.

Castleton 51, Suffolk 42; Castleton 53, Westfield 43 — Alyssa Leonard of Amherst scored 14 points in the Spartans’ home win over Suffolk in the ECAC Championship game Sunday.

Leonard, a junior guard, also scored 14 points while hauling in seven rebounds in the semifinals Saturday against the Owls.

Men’s basketball

Eastern Connecticut 74, Westfield 60; Westfield 88, Castleton 72 — Grant Cooper of Northampton had 11 points and four steals for the Owls in the ECAC championship game at home Sunday.

In Saturday’s semifinal win over Castleton, Cooper had 14 points and five rebounds.
