Richmond did not make another field goal in the game as the Minutemen scored 11 straight points as part of a 14-2 run that allowed them to snatch a 70-65 win Sunday before 5,467 fans at the Mullins Center.

“We keyed in on one stop at a time and defensive rebounding,” UMass junior forward Sampson Carter said. “I think the biggest thing was defensive rebounding.”

Carter delivered several clutch plays for the Minutemen in that stretch. He lobbed a perfect pass to Cady Lalanne from the left corner to the right block as the sophomore big man laid in the game-tying basket at 63-63 with 4:09 left.

Chaz Williams blocked Wayne Sparrow driving the baseline at the other end, which led to a shot-clock violation. After a UMass turnover and a missed shot by the Spiders, Greg Robbins fouled Carter inside with 2:11 left. The senior made both free throws to give the Minutemen their first lead at 65-63 since early in the half.

Richmond missed its last 10 field goal attempts in the game including three in a row after Carter’s free throws. Carter snagged the rebound off the third miss with 1:03 left and gave the ball to Williams.

Against a Spiders team known for its back-door cuts, UMass used one to deliver the knockout blow. Williams ran the shot clock way down before driving toward the basket. As the Richmond defense moved to cut him off, Williams fed a bounce pass to Freddie Riley attacking from the right baseline. The senior guard went under the net and dropped in a reverse layup that gave the Minutemen a 67-63 lead with 27 seconds left.

“When the ball first got inbounded, I looked at Chaz and told him I was going back door,” Riley said. “It ended up being a good play.”

Williams added, “We made eye contact. The whole time I was dribbling we were communicating.”

Kendall Anthony ended the Spiders’ scoring drought with two free throws, but Williams hit three-of- four from the line to close out the win.

“That was a good win,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “That team just beat VCU (Thursday), which is a top-20 team.”

Williams led the Minutemen (13-5, 3-2 Atlantic 10) with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists, but had a season-worst seven turnovers. Lalanne added 12 points, while Carter had 10 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

“I felt really good,” Carter said. “I caught a good rhythm early.”

Riley, who had nine points in a career-high 40 minutes, did the lion’s share of the work in shutting down Darien Brothers, who scored eight points for Richmond — less than half his 16.3 points per game average entering the game.

“I liked his defense,” Kellogg said of Riley. “I thought he did a real nice job on Brothers.”

Sparrow led the Spiders (13-8, 3-3 A-10) with 13 points, but they all came in the first half.

UMass goes on the road for its next two games starting with La Salle at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Kellogg said he liked seeing his team win on a day that it struggled to shoot from outside.

“It was good to see us shoot 3-for-15 from 3-point range and get 27 free throw attempts. I think it showed we were trying to attack the rim,” Kellogg said. “We hadn’t really won a ton of times when our percentage from 3-point range was that.”
