Tuesday’s high school baseball/softball: Peter Watroba deals for Frontier Regional
Peter Watroba continued his dominance on the mound Tuesday as the Frontier Regional baseball team clinched a postseason berth.
Watroba struck out two, walked none and scattered three hits over six scoreless innings as the Red Hawks defeated Mohawk Trail 12-1 in South Deerfield.
Watroba has now worked 38 innings this season without allowing an earned run. He’s allowed one run on the year for Frontier (10-2, 8-1 Hampshire).
Niko Ames (two RBIs, stolen base), Chris Fontaine (RBI), Sean Doyle (double, stolen base) and Ryan Hoar (two runs, stolen base) each had two hits for Frontier.
Northampton 18, Belchertown 7 — Six different players had two or more hits as the Blue Devils (6-7, 2-2 Suburban) put up 19 in the home victory.
Zack Goodwin-Boyd went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, Mack Hale was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, and Sam Santiago picked up his first three varsity hits with an RBI.
Ben Christopher (four runs, two RBIs), David Konowitch (three RBIs, run) and R.J. Ramsden (two RBIs, two runs) each had two hits.
Freshman Hunter Salem pitched the first 51∕3 innings to earn his first career win, while Sam Walker threw 12∕3 scoreless innings.
Eric Adzima hit a bases-clearing double for the Orioles (2-11, 0-3). Jonathan Mastalerz struck out nine in five innings of relief.
Easthampton 15, Pioneer Regional 4 — Shy Torres had four hits, scored five runs and knocked in a pair to lead the Eagles (6-4, 5-4 Hampshire) to a blowout home win.
Chris Starcun doubled twice to drive in three and also scored three times for Easthampton. Grayson Nash had two hits and two RBIs, while Austin Crow added a three-run triple.
Starcun tossed four shutout innings to pick up the victory.
Pioneer Christian 7, Smith Vocational 1 — Kevin Wackerbarth struck out 11 in a complete-game effort in the home loss for the Vikings (0-12, 0-8 Tri-County South).
Wackerbarth and Peter Morales had the only two hits for Smith Voke. Jason Talbot scored in the sixth after being hit by a pitch. He stole second and third before coming in on an overthrow.
Westfield 2, Northampton 0 — Mary Greco had two of the Blue Devils’ three hits off Bombers (14-0) pitcher Sarah McNerney at home.
Emilie Baldwin had one hit for Northampton (9-4) in the loss.
Greco was charged with the loss in the circle. The senior allowed five hits and one walk while striking out two.
