Smith College wins first NCAA Division III Tournament basketball game

The Pioneers basketball team played its first ever NCAA Division III Tournament game Friday and upset No. 8-ranked Southern Maine 80-58 in the first round in Gorham, Maine.
Five players reached double figures as the Pioneers (23-4) handed the Huskies (27-2) their second loss of the season.
Paulina Solis had 17 points, six steals, five assists and four rebounds. Rosa Drummond had 16 points and six rebounds, while Devon Quattrocchi had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Sydney Parkmond and Lauren Weston of Florence each had 12 points. Weston added nine rebounds and four blocks off the bench.
Smith College will play Ithaca at 7 p.m. Saturday in Gorham.
Amherst College 67, Farmingdale State 39 — Bridget Crowley had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Lord Jeffs (27-1) rolled to an NCAA Division III Tournament first round win at home.
Megan Robertson had 12 points, while Cheyenne Pritchard added 11 points and five steals.
Amherst will host the University of New England at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Babson 61, New Paltz State 45 — Kristen Ferola of Amherst had 12 points, three rebounds and two assists as the Beavers (26-2) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Babson will host Tufts at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Jenika Parson of Smith College placed fourth with 426.05 points on the 1-meter springboard at the NCAA Division III Regional Diving Championship, held at Springfield College.
