Snowstorm postpones UMass hockey and men’s lacrosse; men’s basketball still on for Saturday
AMHERST — The University of Massachusetts men’s basketball game against Saint Joseph’s at 2 p.m. Saturday is still on as scheduled despite the winter storm predicted to wallop the region on Friday and Saturday.
The game is scheduled to be on ESPN2.
UMass athletic director John McCutcheon didn’t expect a change going forward.
“We think we’ll be OK for basketball,” McCutcheon said. “We think we’ll have the officials here and St. Joe’s here. The fact that we don’t have hockey (Friday) night will let us go ahead and get the facility set up for basketball without having to do the transition from hockey to basketball overnight during a blizzard. That will help us. As long as ESPN can get their trucks here, I think we’re OK there.”
UMass’ hockey and men’s lacrosse games were all moved because of the weather.
The hockey team’s Friday night home game against Northeastern has been moved to Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets for Friday’s game will be honored for that game. Saturday’s game at Merrimack has been moved to Sunday at 4 p.m. The game was slated to be on NESN, but no longer will be.
Saturday’s men’s lacrosse season opener against Army has been moved to Sunday at noon at Garber Field.
The Valentine Invitational, which both the men’s and women’s track and field teams were scheduled to participate in, has been cancelled.
The women’s lacrosse team departed Thursday for Los Angeles, where no snow is forecasted. No. 13 UMass plays No. 2 Northweastern at 6 p.m. on Friday and USC at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
