Slumping Ravens fire offensive coordinator
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Cam Cameron was fired Monday as offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, who have lost two straight and are still striving for consistency in the running and passing game.
Cameron ran the Baltimore offense since the start of the 2008 season for coach John Harbaugh. Since that time, the Ravens’ attack has repeatedly taken a back seat to the team’s defense, and this year the offense ranks 18th with 344.4 yards per game.
Jim Caldwell, who was hired as quarterbacks coach before the season, will assume Cameron’s duties. Caldwell was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-11.
Harbaugh didn’t give a detailed explanation for the move, which came less than 24 hours after the Ravens lost to the Washington Redskins 31-28 in overtime.
Redskins coach says RG3 has mild sprain
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that Robert Griffin III has a mild sprain of a ligament in the right knee and hasn’t been ruled out for the upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns.
Shanahan said the injury is a Grade 1 sprain of the lateral collateral ligament on the outside of the knee, caused when the rookie quarterback was hit at the end of a scramble late in regulation in the Redskins’ 31-28 overtime win Sunday over the Baltimore Ravens.
Shanahan says Griffin has mild swelling and is receiving treatment multiple times a day.
“He’s definitely not ruled out for the Cleveland game,” Shanahan said.
Vick, McCoy passed baseline tests, Celek out
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy have passed concussion tests and could return to practice with the Eagles as early as Tuesday.
Vick has missed the last four games and McCoy the last three. Rookies Nick Foles and Bryce Brown have filled in at quarterback and running back, respectively.
Both players can now practice without hitting, but must be been cleared by an independent neurologist before participating in any contact drills.
Tight end Brent Celek sustained a concussion in Sunday’s win at Tampa Bay and won’t play against Cincinnati on Thursday night.
Foles already has been named the starter for the rest of the season regardless of Vick’s status. Foles led the Eagles (4-9) to their first win in more than two months in comeback fashion, 23-21, over the Buccaneers Sunday.
Embattled Arizona claims QB Hoyer
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have claimed quarterback Brian Hoyer off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Cardinals, with injuries and inconsistent play at quarterback, have lost nine in a row and are coming off a 58-0 embarrassment at Seattle.
Hoyer was with the Steelers for three weeks while Ben Roethlisberger was injured. After a standout career at Michigan State, Hoyer spent his first three NFL seasons with New England before being released by the Patriots on Aug. 31.
Hoyer takes the roster spot of center Rich Ohrnberger, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve with an injured knee.
Jaguars coach Mularkey released from hospital
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey is out of the hospital and feeling fine.
The Jaguars said Mularkey was released Monday afternoon after a brief stay that included tests. Mularkey showed up at the facility a day after his team’s 17-10 loss to the New York Jets and started feeling ill. He went to a team trainer, who took him to a nearby hospital.
The team offered few other details about his illness.
