Anne Maspero of Northampton dies after car hits loading dock at Big Y supermarket
NORTHAMPTON — Anne Maspero, 92, of Northampton, died Friday afternoon after her car crashed into a loading dock at Big Y supermarket on North King Street.
Police Lt. Jody Kasper said Maspero’s car crashed into the loading dock about 3 p.m.
She was alone in the vehicle, Kasper said.
Northampton police were at Big Y already, investigating a report of shoplifting, when the single-car accident was reported, the lieutenant said.
“They were already on the scene, so they responded right away,” she said.
Maspero was briefly trapped in the vehicle and was extricated by rescue workers, Kasper said.
Maspero was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Kasper said.
Northampton Police Detective Patrick Moody said police suspected a “medical issue” may have caused Maspero to drive into a wall, located on the northeast side of the supermarket.
He said he could not say if she died as a result of a medical issue or the crash.
Kasper said the Northampton accident-reconstruction team will investigate the crash to determine its cause.
The car’s crumpled front end was visible as it was towed away on a flatbed truck around 3:45 p.m.
