Anne Perkins: Lessons to be learned from San Onofre

To the editor:

I was struck by the caption on the photo in the June 10 Gazette of the San Onofre nuclear power plant that is closing “ . . .after an epic 16 month battle over whether the twin reactors could be safely restarted with millions of people living nearby.”

Even though there are not millions of us in this rural region, the closing of San Onofre should encourage those of us living in this area. Amherst is only 25 miles (as the radiation flies) away from the outdated and dangerous Vermont Yankee nuclear plant. We need to raise our voices until it, too, is closed.

Vermont Yankee is identical to the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plants, and no longer meets current Nuclear Regulatory Commission specifications for safety.
