Julia Riseman: Supports rehabilitation of Beaver Brood bridge
To the editor:
“A stitch in time saves nine.” Saving the beautiful 150-year-old arch bridge over Beaver Brook, and building out the rail trail from Leeds to the Williamsburg line, is important conservation work.
The recent story “City again pursuing rail trail extension” (Gazette, April 26) detailed plans to rehabilitate and improve this section of the rail trail. This is a critically important development which will be discussed and voted upon by the Northampton City Council at their meeting on Thursday.
This historic and beautiful trail has been enjoyed by many residents of Northampton and Williamsburg over the past decades, but without attention it could be lost to future generations. Erosion, the roots of trees inside the stone bridge, and serious deferred maintenance threaten the path, bridge and river.
I support this project and encourage the City Council to approve it because it will help ensure that future generations will be able to appreciate the beautiful vistas and quiet splendor of this corner of our community. I hope that others will join in to demonstrate their support.
