Community backing vital for schools’ ‘essential extras’
To the editor:
The Northampton Poetry Slam, as reported by the Gazette (“Poetry Slam at NHS Turns 15,” Dec. 13), is a wonderful example of the many “essential extras” that are not covered in our school budget but that deeply enrich our students’ academic experience.
In addition to the incredible work of the teachers and students, who are mentioned in the article, let’s also acknowledge the community without whom the Poetry Slam and many other programs would not be possible. It is because of the generous support of parents and businesses, through the Northampton Education Foundation, the Northampton Arts Council (think Transperformance) and all the Northampton PTOs that these inspiring and important programs are a reality for Northampton students.
I feel blessed to be raising teens in such a visionary, generous and youth-empowering community and school district.
