Lobbying influences take us down wrong road
To the editor:
Members of Congress enjoy major entitlement benefits from their position and the laws that they pass.
Example: An important concept in health care is prevention, particularly the issue of obesity in our children. Yet, according to the media, a visit from the Idaho potato-growers made french fries a health food. The source of the funding to turn pizza into a “veggie” was not identified; maybe Herman Cain was still in town.
A much larger example is the huge cost of medications under Medicare.Program rules prevent competitive shopping for medications. The VA system buys much of its medications from Canada and saves money. The laws as written by Congress forbid this.
Guess what industry has been the top contributor to both parties? The drug industry! It put on a major PR effort to convince the public that non-U.S. drugs were inferior. How do we control a government whose members are under the sway of organizations controlled by money? Neither party is going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. How do we take back our government?
Maybe folks from the Five College consortium can start something. Just a thought.
