Thankful for defeat of ‘Death With Dignity’

To the editor:

Thankfully, voters in Massachusetts have rejected Question 2 (prescribing medication to end life), pertaining to doctor-prescribed, assisted suicide.

Proponents of this ballot initiative had masked the reality of self-murder with phrases such as “Death With Dignity” and “compassionate choice.” It is neither. It is the willful taking of a human life. Suicide in any form is a tragic occurrence. Suicide which involves the ingestion of deadly drugs is nothing less than premeditated murder. Passage of this measure would have almost certainly led to a further disregard for the aged and disabled members of our community. Some insurance companies would no doubt have supported this measure, since it is certainly less costly to prescribe life-ending drugs than to prescribe medications to treat and extend people’s lives.

All of us, aware of our own mortality, will sooner or later be old, disabled and/or terminally ill. It would be comforting to think that our lives, however fragile, will be valued until divine providence intervenes and we are called to make our journey into the next world. Thank God for all those who voted no on Question 2 and for their respect for the dignity of human life from birth until natural death.
