Urges action on Simpson-Bowles debt-reduction proposal
To the editor:
We have a patriotic duty to come together on a plan that moves us forward, immediately, with respect to our country’s fiscal situation. The debt reduction bill known as Simpson-Bowles and proposed by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform is the output from a bipartisan group of congressional leaders with vast experience and knowledge of the subject. Their proposal represents a balanced and shared sacrifice approach to making progress in the short term as well as the long term.
It isn’t perfect, but it is the best plan on the table at the moment and we need to take action now. We should all take steps to let key members in Congress know that we expect them to step up and lead efforts that result in just saying yes to Simpson-Bowles. Lack of action and ongoing debate and posturing is costing us far more than the very issues we keep debating within Simpson-Bowles. Under our country’s fiscal circumstances, it is irresponsible at this stage to continue debate instead of taking immediate action of some kind that moves us forward.
