Supports work to close coal-fired power plant
To the editor:
I want to applaude Kim Finch, Drew Grande, Rick Purcell and all the others working to close the coal-fired Mount Tom power plant. There are many environmental causes worth fighting for but none affects the daily life of people in Northampton like this one.
Every day that power plant operates, toxic byproducts of coal burning are put into the air we breathe and have a real impact on our health. There is nothing more depressing than seeing a train full of coal going down the tracks knowing that soon all that coal will be in the air we breathe.
I appreciate the efforts that GDF Suez has made to try to clean up the exhaust, but I do believe that “clean coal” is an oxymoron. There is no question that the abundance of natural gas comes with its own environmental price. However for now this is clearly a battle worth fighting and I appreciate the hard work that these people have done.
