Batya Bauman: Fireworks displays are dangerous, anachronistic

To the editor:

As July 4 approaches, I wish to remind readers of the Gazette that fireworks displays serve no purpose except to entertain people unaware of their harm to wildlife and domestic animals, as well as to the environment. Perhaps they simply don’t care and are blissfully entertained by these colorful explosions reminiscent of violence and war.

People with post-traumatic stress (for example, returning veterans) and respiratory issues also suffer from fireworks.

I urge that our progressive towns move away from this anachronistic way of celebrating our nation’s anniversary.

Amherst

The fireworks in Northampton took place at Look Park, which is "home" to a number of unfortunate zoo animals. The animals are terrified by the noise. Fireworks should never be exploded so close to captive animals. It is cruel.

I'm in COMPLETE agreement with you! Fireworks are SO ridiculous...and not even that entertaining. They scare both wildlife and domesticated animals as they spread toxins all over the place...usually waterways. And they're very dangerous too.

Glad (once again) that I don't live in Amherst...
