Evan Ross: Backs Markey for U.S. Senate
To the editor:
With the primary over, we have our nominees to fill John Kerry’s Senate seat. On the Democratic side we have Ed Markey, a veteran lawmaker who has worked tirelessly in Congress on progressive issues. Anyone who follows politics knows that change is often slow and incremental, and winning lasting change requires dogged persistence. Markey has shown that he’s willing to slog through the difficult political terrain to advance progressive values. His candidacy represents an opportunity to give Elizabeth Warren a strong partner in Washington to help move President Obama’s priorities forward.
The Republican, Gabriel Gomez, represents a different opportunity: an opportunity for Republican Mitch McConnell to expand his influence in the Senate to block President Obama’s every move. McConnell knows that the Republicans have a real chance at taking over the Senate in the 2014 elections, and Gomez is his opportunity to jump-start that takeover. We know what a McConnell-run Senate would look like: rolling back environmental protections, repealing health care reform and a relentless attack on women’s reproductive rights. Gomez is the first step toward that Senate.
In 2012, Massachusetts rejected a Republican-controlled Senate and sent a Democrat to Washington. We can’t let Gabriel Gomez cancel out Elizabeth Warren’s votes. It is imperative that we again send a progressive voice to the Senate and elect Ed Markey. And we can’t take any chances. Elections are won when concerned citizens get involved. It’s not just about putting up a yard sign, but about knocking on doors and making phone calls. We know how to win, so let’s get to work.
