Today’s secessionists will miss federal benefits
To the editor:
On Nov. 9 people living in Texas, along with residents of 19 other states, filed for secession from the Union.
Bravo! President Obama should immediately grant independence to all of them. And when he does, he should announce that military bases in these states will be closed, that their farms and schools and businesses will no longer receive federal subsidies and that their highways will not be maintained.
He should also announce that Medicare, Social Security, welfare, Social Security Disability Insurance, fuel assistance, food stamps and all other federally funded social programs will immediately cease. The states, now independent countries, will have to purchase federally owned lands, parks, and property — without the help of federal lending institutions.
They will have to pay off their debts, with their own currency.
I hope President Obama has the good sense to let them go.
Editor’s note: Since Verrillo wrote this letter, more petitions have been created. Now, each of the 50 states has a petition seeking secession.
