Thursday’s high schools: Frontier Regional holds on, beats Hopkins Academy in girls basketball

The Frontier Regional girls basketball team held a 10-point lead with three minutes left against Hopkins Academy.

The edge was just enough.

The Golden Hawks a number of chances down the stretch to tie the game but the Red Hawks’ defense held for a 42-39 victory in Hadley Thursday.

Among the missed chances was a missed layup by Hopkins, which also forced a couple turnovers with its press but couldn’t convert on the other end. The Hawks had possession with eight seconds left but turned the ball over.

“They played tough defense,” Hopkins coach Fred Ciaglo said. “They get after it but we missed a number of opportunities.”

Olivia Riordan had 14 points, while Amanda Calvo added 11 for Frontier (7-6, 7-5 Franklin South).

Olivia Mathieu had 13 points, eight steals and six rebounds, while twins Mackenzie and Kate Sullivan each had 10 points for Hopkins (8-6, 8-4).

Northampton 49, Ludlow 29 — Anna Moore and Maya Kerstetter each had matching 13-point, 11-rebound stat lines as the Blue Devils rolled on the road.

Charlotte Maurer added six points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Hamp (12-2, 5-1 Valley Wheel).

Holyoke Catholic 32, Sci-Tech 24 — Danielle Easton had eight points and 11 rebounds, while sisters Katie and Lilli Klejna each had six points for the Gaels (6-7, 3-1 Bi-County West) in Springfield.

Kaitlyn Mastello added eight points and 12 rebounds for Gateway (8-2, 8-1 Tri-County), which needs two more wins to qualify for postseason.

Frankin Technical 37, Smith Vocational 17 — Pricilla Sepulveda had six points, while Madeline Spencer-Orrell and Zuleika Ortiz each had 10 rebounds, but the Vikings (2-8, 2-7 Tri-County) lost in Montague.

Westfield 42, Amherst 34 — The Bombers used a 10-2 run in the third quarter to erase the Hurricanes’ 19-18 halftime lead and pulled away from there.
