Monday’s baseball: Ethan Wenner blasts grand slam to power Hopkins past Athol

The Hopkins Academy baseball team used the long ball to earn its first league victory on Monday afternoon.

Ethan Wenner blasted a sixth-inning grand slam and the Golden Hawks held on for a 7-6 win at Athol.

Sean Quill added two hits, including a solo home run, and two RBIs for Hopkins (2-5, 1-3 Hampshire).

Pat Knightly also had three hits.

Tim Knightly allowed one earned run and struck out six over three innings of relief to earn the win. Evan Delaney fanned six over the first four innings.

Amherst Regional 5, Agawam 4 — The Hurricanes (7-1, 2-1 Valley League) rallied from an early four-run deficit on the road to claim their seventh straight win.

Ty Peake singled in a pair of runs to tie it in the sixth, then Jack Schrader brought in Peake with the go-ahead tally on a single. Both hits came with two outs and two strikes.

Jamie Carey (run) and C.J. Rogalski had an RBI apiece for Amherst, while Peake, Jaimon Olmstead, Asher Young and Justin Carey each scored once.

The comeback made a winner of Alec Snyder-Fair, who allowed just one earned run on eight hits in the complete-game win. He struck out three.

Belchertown 4, Chicopee 3 — Nick Leduc had three hits, including the game-winning infield hit in the sixth when the Orioles (2-6) scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead.

James Ryan, Steve Boudreau and Jim Kusnierz each had two hits.

Jake Mastorakis and Ryan each made run-saving catches in the outfield.

Reliever Jon Mastalerz got the final out in the sixth and earned the win. Tom Daley pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.

Smith Academy 5, Sabis 0 — Keith Natale spun a two-hitter as the Falcons cruised in Springfield.

Natale struck out 11 and worked around two hits, two walks and two errors to earn the complete-game shutout.

Jojo Afflitto (double, run), David Longstreeth (run, RBI) and Harry Kennedy (RBI) each had two hits for Smith (9-1).

St. Mary’s 10, Smith Vocational 0 — Miguel Lugo drew a first-inning walk and reached on a seventh-inning error, serving as the lone times the Vikings reached base against Bryce Kibbe (11 strikeouts) at Arcanum Field.

Kevin Wackerbarth was charged with the loss on the mound for Smith (0-6).

Southwick 5, Hampshire Regional 1 — The Rams scored three times in the top of the seventh to pull away in a previously close game in Westhampton.

Adam Laroche had three hits and scored the lone run for the Raiders (3-3, 2-2 Bi-County) on an RBI triple for Colton Delisle.

Gateway Regional 13, Holyoke Catholic 3 — Nate Croke went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs to help lead the Gators (2-4, 2-2 Bi-County) to the road victory.

John Haskell doubled twice, scored twice and knocked in one for Gateway. Justin Edinger and Curtis Dowers both had three hits and an RBI, while Willis Pollard (two RBIs) and Ethan Gamble (two RBIs) had two hits apiece.

Curtis Dowers went six innings for the win. He allowed just one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Evan Daigle picked up two RBIs and Dorian Guidi scored two runs for the Gaels (1-6, 1-5).

Granby 8, Putnam 5 — Granby starting pitcher Brent Sullivan struck out five batters in seven innings of work as the Rams (6-2) beat the Beavers (4-3).

Max Humphrey and Andrew Strycharz each had two RBIs in the victory.

Brandon Cloutier had two hits, while Travis Padgett had a hit and one RBI.

Greenfield 6, Easthampton 5 — Zach Bartak singled home Jake Elwell in the bottom of the seventh to keep the Green Wave (6-0, 5-0 Hampshire) undefeated on the season.

Dakota Wheeler, Alan Gormley and Hunter Leveille each had a hit and an RBI for the Eagles (2-3, 1-3).

Chris Starcun struck out seven and walked five in six innings of work. Austin Crow was charged with the loss in relief.
