Tuesday’s high schools: Smith Academy field hockey, South Hadley girls soccer qualify for postseason

A pair of teams punched their tickets to the postseason on Tuesday afternoon — one a tournament stalwart, the other making its first appearance in a while.

The Smith Academy field hockey team went on the road to beat Mohawk 3-1 to earn a bid.

Meanwhile, the South Hadley girls soccer team posted a 3-2 home victory over Athol to clinch its first berth since 2008.

Smith Academy 3, Mohawk 1 — Sisters Danielle (two goals) and Isabelle Duseau (one) led the scoring that clinched a playoff spot for the Falcons (9-5-1, 6-1 North).

Kelly Ryan contributed an assist, while keeper Lauren Bradford made five saves.

South Hadley 7, Pioneer Regional 1 — Emily Florence (two assists) and Dominique Wilkins (assist) each scored two goals as the Tigers (6-9-1) cruised on the road.

Jackie Doyle, Taylor Guertin (assist) and freshman Kate O’Neil each had one goal. O’Neil’s was the first of her varsity career.

Ali Rondeau had an assist, while Abby Godek made three saves for the win.

Frontier Regional 2, Greenfield 0 — Rose Moscaritolo and McKayla Poissant each scored unassisted goals as the Red Hawks (11-3-1) cruised on the road.

Gwen Thayer made three saves in the win.

Longmeadow 6 Amherst Regional 0 — Nadia Squitiero made 23 saves, but the Hurricanes (3-9) fell on the road.

Girls soccer

South Hadley 3, Athol 2 — Senior Meghan Ginley scored the game winner that assured the Tigers (8-4-3, 3-2-1 Pioneer North) a tournament spot.

Katie Evans and Tara Bainbridge a tally, while Gigi Thibault, Rachel Harrington and Kaitlyn Hoschtetler picked up an assist apiece.

Keeper Abby Lukasik made four saves for the Tigers.

Easthampton 2, Granby 0 — The Eagles took over first place in the Pioneer North as Maddie Grabowski and Gabby Downer hooked up twice in the second half to provide the difference.

Grabowski scored with 38 minutes, then again with 23 minutes remaining. Downer had both assists.

Alyssa Fugiel made six saves for Easthampton (9-1-3, 4-1-1).

Tiereny George played excellent defense on Granby freshman Erin Mikalchus, who scored one goal in the team’s previous meeting, won 2-0 by Granby.

Brittany Hauschild made four saves for the Rams (10-2-1, 4-1-0) in the loss.

Smith Academy 1, Holyoke Catholic 0 — Cassidy Snyder scored the lone goal and the Falcons (10-3-1, 5-0-0 Pioneer South) beat the Gaels (7-4-3, 2-2-2) on the road.

Mia Ellis assisted on Snyder’s goal, and Brooke Pashek had nine saves for the Falcons.

Katie Klejna made eight stops for Catholic.

Frontier Regional 1, Hopkins Academy 0 — Angela Self scored from Amanda Calvo to lift the Red Hawks (5-5-2) back to the .500 mark with the home win.

Camilla Baronas stopped all five shots she faced, while Kate Sullivan made 14 saves for the Golden Hawks (5-8-2).

Boys soccer

Renaissance 3, Granby 0 — Brett Sullivan had 13 saves but the Rams (5-8-2, 0-5-1 McGrath South) fell to Renaissance on the road.

Pioneer Christian 2, Smith Vocational 0 — Josh Harriman made eight saves, but the Vikings (2-8-2) were unable to score at home.

Belchertown 4, Longmeadow 0 — Alex DeSantis scored twice with an assist to help the Orioles (12-2, 5-1 Churchill) win at home.

Noah Lussier and Kyle Gadoury added a goal apiece. Chris Noga, Cam Messier and John Ingram each posted an assist.

Keeper Louis Berger made six saves for the shutout.

Amherst Regional 3, Minnechaug 1 — Wilson Fidalgo, Ian Robson and Brandon Vazquez scored a goal each as the Hurricanes (9-2-3, 3-0-3 Smith) won on the road.

Eric Gooden contributed an assist for Amherst.

Sharing time in goal, Mike Rock made four saves while Matt Santana stopped one for the Hurricanes.

Holyoke 2, Smith Academy 0 — Cameron Woodward made nine saves but the Division 4 Falcons (7-4-3) fell at the Division 1 Purple Knights (3-8-2).

South Hadley 1, Chicopee 1 — Nate Flachs scored on a 30-yard shot with nine minutes remaining as South Hadley (6-8-2) kept their season alive with the road draw.

Zach Simon assisted on Flachs’ goal.

Christian Zuchowski had 11 saves for the Tigers, who must win their final two games to qualify for postseason.

Northampton 1, Chicopee Comp 0 — Rowan Steere scored off an assist from Casey Intrator for the Blue Devils (2-13, 2-4 Moriarty) in the home win.

Keeper Jon Brodeur made nine saves for a shutout win.

Girls volleyball

Southwick 3, Smith Vocational 1 — Riley Lacaprucia (two kills) and Bailee Richardson (three digs, four assists) each had two aces but the Vikings (0-14) fell 25-8, 25-18, 21-25, 25-23 at home.

Nashaelid Cintron had three assists and two digs in the loss.
