Weekend baseball: Matt Beauchemin sparks Pettengill Insurance to 2-0 weekend
Matt Beauchemin led Pettengill Insurance with his arm on Saturday and his bat on Sunday as the team picked up a pair of wins over the weekend.
Beauchemin tossed a complete-game six hitter, striking out 12 and walking one in Saturday’s 6-1 win over Easthampton at home.
He then had three hits, including a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored for South Hadley in Sunday’s 15-4 win over Belchertown.
On Saturday, Joe Ciolek (two doubles, three RBIs) and Connor Sheridan (RBI) each had two hits, while Pat Sears added a hit and an RBI.
On Sunday, Ciolek earned the win in six-plus innings of relief as Pettengill overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit.
Ciolek struc out eight, walked three and allowed four hits.
Scott Bicknell (three hits, four RBIs) and Tom Spring (three run) each had two hits in the win.
Nick Kubacki and James Ryan each had two hits in the loss for Belchertown (0-17).
King & Cushman 4, Easthampton 3; Greenfield 8, King & Cushman 1 — It took a thriller, but Northampton King & Cushman Post 28 finally snapped its six-game losing streak Sunday at home.
Trailing by one in the bottom of the sixth inning, Christian Smiarowski smacked a two-run double to left-center field and Sam Walker got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh at Arcanum Field.
David Konowtich and Mack Hale each doubled to reach base and then scored on Smiarowski’s hit.
David Longstreeth pitched six innings, striking out seven and allowing three runs for Post 28 (7-10) to earn the win.
Chris Starcun went six innings for Easthampton (6-11), striking out four while allowing four runs on nine hits. Starcun also went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring a run in the sixth.
Brandon Weyant, Erik Fickett, and Austin Crow all had hits for Easthampton in the loss.
Konowitch had the lone hit for King & Cushman Saturday, while Keith Natale scored the only run.
Amherst 5, Belchertown 0; Greenfield 6, Amherst 0 — Tim Knightly tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout as Amherst won at home Sunday.
Knightly struck out 10 and walked two. He also had two hits and two RBIs for Amherst (5-10).
Asher Young and Alex Snyder-Fair had hits in the win.
Young went the distance in Saturday’s loss on the road.
Justin Carey, Jamie Carey and Ethan Winter had hits for Amherst.
Easthampton 8, Frontier 5 — Zach Crisafulli went 1-for-2 with three RBIs as Easthampton (4-11) won at home Saturday.
Kyle Richard had two hits, including a double and an RBI.
Tyler Vishaway struck out eight over six-plus innings to earn the win.
Belchertown 4-0, Amherst 2-12 — Ally Hamelin had a home run and scored three times as Amherst (5-6-1) split Sunday’s doubleheader in Belchertown.
Tessa Cote went the distance and struck out 10 while allowing three hits to lead Belchertown (2-9) to a game one victory.
Felicia Verville had a two-run single in the victory.
Hamelin scored twice for Amherst, while Becca Carkhuff had a hit and two RBIs.
Hamelin then smacked a solo home run as part of a seven-run fourth in Amherst’s game two victory.
Alyssa Ouellette added a two-run double in the fourth.
Allie Laclair, who started both games, allowed two hits and struck out two in five innings of work to earn the win for Amherst.
Southwick 7, Easthampton 2; Easthampton 13, Southwick 4 — Kayla McFarland and Melanie Fasoli each went 3-for-4 as Easthampton (9-4) salvaged a doubleheader split with a game two victory Sunday in Southwick.
McFarland had three RBIs and three runs scored, while Fasoli contributed two doubles, three runs and one RBI.
Alyssa Jasak went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.
Kate Avard and Jaqui Gomez each went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the game one loss.
Caelin Mottor pitched both games for Easthampton.
