Summer sports: Northampton Mickey Mantle rallies for win against South Hadley
Hunter Salem’s bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh capped a four-run rally as the Northampton Mickey Mantle baseball team beat South Hadley 6-5 Wednesday on the road.
Kyle Warren had two hits in the win, while Colby Lander drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-3 and set up Salem’s heroics.
Christian Candelario-Romero earned the win by allowing only one earned run on eight hits in six-plus innings for Hamp (8-3).
Chris Soderberg came on with a runner on and nobody out in the last of the seventh. He promptly picked the runner off first, then got the last two outs. The game ended on a sliding catch by right fielder Ben O’Connor.
Brian Bak went 3-for-3 for South Hadley (1-12), while Matt Werenski had a pair of hits.
Little League (11/12)
Easthampton 10, Westfield South 2 — Easthampton scored 10 times in the first inning to earn a spot in the semifinals of the District 2 tournament.
Easthampton will face Westfield North, Friday at 6 p.m. at Paper Mill Field in Westfield in the single-elimination semifinals.
Dawson Wolcott struck out seven and walked three in five innings to earn the win. He helped himself with a two hits, including a three-run home run. Mike Ryan added three hits, two runs and an RBI, while Tyler Karakula had a double and drove in two runs.
Gateway 2, Amherst 1 — Billy Mollison hit the game-winning home run in the top of the seventh in Gateway’s win against Amherst (1-3) in Huntington.
B.J. Moreau plated Bobby Archambault with the tying run in the sixth inning. Jacob Rasuf hit a double for Gateway (1-3) in the inning.
Archambault struck out seven and walked nine over six innings. Billy Mollison fanned one in one inning.
Josh GerberDolan drove in Isiah Moyston for Amherst in the third.
Eli Kayser-Hirsh pitched 21∕3 innings for Amherst, while Jack Spence finished the game.
Bay State Game Softball
West 10, Metro 5 — West won the bronze medal Wednesday after being eliminated from gold medal contention earlier in the day.
Sam Cox (three RBIs) had a double and scored two runs for West, with Vicky Beaulieu contributing a double and an RBI.
Sam Stolar had a hit and an RBI, Raven Fournier had two hits and scored a run, and Jennifer Yelin had two RBIs with one hit.
Central 7, West 6 — Emily Baldwin of Northampton had one hit and an RBI for West in the first game.
Becca Carkhuff had one hit and one RBI, Beaulieu triple and scored a run, Allison Mishol had a double and two RBIs, and Cox contributed one hit and one RBI.
