Westhampton caucus to nominate candidates Monday
Town residents can make nominations for town offices, including seats on the Select Board and Finance Committee and the now vacant positions of moderator and auditor, at a town caucus set for Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
Names will be taken from the floor and candidates who accept nominations within 72 hours will be on the ballot for the June 1 municipal election, according to town officials. Nominations for a moderator for the May 12 Town Meeting will be taken from the floor and elected at that meeting.
Town Clerk Patricia Cotton noted that seats on the Selectboard and the position of moderator are two that must be filled by election, while others can be appointed by the board.
“The Finance Committee is a great place to start for newcomers to town government,” she added. “It gives you a basic understanding of how a town operates in providing necessary services for its residents.”
Nominations can be submitted Monday for the following offices: Selectboard (one three-year seat); Board of Assessors (one three-year seat); Planning Board (two three-year seats); Board of Health (a one-year seat and a three-year seat); Finance Committee (a two-year seat and three three-year seats); Elementary School Committee (one three-year seat); moderator (one one-year seat); auditor (one one-year seat); Tree Warden (one one-year seat); Recreation Committee (one three-year seat); Library Trustees (two three-year seats); Constable North District (one three-year seat); Hampshire Councilor (one two-year seat).
Cotton said incumbents who have indicated they plan to run for re-election on June 1 are: Board of Assessors member Dolores Thornhill, Planning Board member Mark Schwallie, Elementary School Committee member Ashleigh Norris, Library Trustee Sarah Mulvehill and Constable Leroy Douchkoff.
