Tuesday’s high schools: Northampton shuts down Agawam in girls basketball

Maya Kerstetter answered the call on defense and still had enough in the tank to post a career-high 18 points as the Northampton girls basketball team held off Agawam 49-40 at home Tuesday night.

Kerstetter and the Blue Devils (6-2) held Alycia Rackliffe (15 points) to three second-half points en route to the win at home.

Northampton trailed 26-25 at halftime, but took control with a 14-4 third quarter.

Anna Walther added 16 points and five assists.

Anna Moore (six points) had 10 rebounds for Northampton, which has won three straight.

Belchertown 52, Cathedral 32 — Marissa Kopacz (nine rebounds) and Téa Spellacy each scored 12 points to lead the Orioles (5-2, 1-0 Bi-County East) to the home victory in their league opener.

Jill Cavanaugh had eight points and eight boards for Belchertown, while Jessica Zalucki added six points.

Granby 40, Monson 30 — Rebecca Sapoukey scored a career-high 17 points with eight rebounds and five blocks as the Rams (7-0, 1-0 Bi-County Central) remained unbeaten with the win at home.

Casey Imelio and Meghan Sullivan each had six points for Granby. Brie Mercier pulled down eight rebounds and Brooke Labrie had five assists.

Hampshire Regional 66, Commerce 5 — The Raiders (6-2, 1-0 Bi-County East) pitched a shutout for the entire first half in opening their league schedule with a road blowout.

Sarah Kober led all scorers with 16 points, while Katy O’Connor (15 rebounds) and Chelsea Moussette added eight points each.

Turners Falls 43, Smith Academy 34 — Ashley Higgins scored a career-high 22 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Falcons (2-6, 1-5 Franklin South) against their former coach Ted Wilcox on the road.

Emiko Barker had the other 12 points for Smith.

Athol 52, Frontier Regional 45 — Olivia Riordan scored a career-high 20 points with 16 rebounds but the Red Hawks (3-4, 3-4 Franklin South) couldn’t complete a fourth-quarter comeback in the road loss. Amanda Calvo added 14 points and nine boards for Frontier, which trailed by as many as 19 but cut the lead to five before running out of time.

Sabis 72, South Hadley 48 — Kara Callahan and Kelly Pouliot scored 11 points apiece for the Tigers (6-2, 0-1 Bi-County Central), who lost to the Bulldogs (10-0, 2-0) in Springfield.

Abby Lukasik added eight for South Hadley in its league opener.

McCann 46, Holyoke Catholic 32 — The Gaels (3-6, 1-1 Bi-County West) hit the road for the second straight day but the result didn’t change.

Mary Nguyen struck for 27 to sink Holyoke Catholic, which lost at Gateway on Monday.

Kyra Robins had eight points to pace the Gaels.

West Springfield 53, Amherst Regional 29 — Jamie Staples had 11 points and Sarah Mangels added nine, but the Hurricanes (0-6) lost on the road.

New Leadership 52, Smith Voke 15 — Nashaelid Cintron (four points), Jocelyn Pierce and Miranda Clark each made a 3-pointer in the loss for the Vikings (1-5).
