Springfield License Commission rejects 1 a.m. curfew for bars

It was reported that the License Commission voted 3-2 on Thursday.

Commission Chairman Peter L. Sygnator backed the curfew. He says that by not curbing late-night crime, the commission sends a message that Springfield is a dangerous place at night.

Commission Member Robert G. Casey, who opposed the earlier closing time, argued that much of the trouble downtown is due to drug users and people gathering on the street waiting for violence to start.

Sarno proposed the curfew in December 2011 on music, dancing, television or other entertainment. He cited shootings, stabbings and other disturbances.

Bar owners and employees said the curfew would hurt business without reducing violence.
