EASTHAMPTON — The South Hadley girls volleyball team picked up an important victory Wednesday.

The Tigers defeated Easthampton 3-1 to keep their postseason hopes alive.

“This was a much win for us,” said South Hadley coach Corey Koske, whose team won 25-18, 25-13, 20-25, 25-23.

The Tigers (7-9, 4-3 Southern) are in second place with one league match remaining against Chicopee (5-8, 2-3). If South Hadley beats Chicopee, the Tigers clinch second and a postseason berth. The Pacers, with three league games left, could still leapfrog and eliminate South Hadley.

Easthampton, meanwhile, needs to win out and get help to qualify. The Eagles (5-9, 2-4) must beat Chicopee and first-place Sabis (12-0, 6-0), then have Chicopee beat South Hadley and Belchertown.

“We really have to win the rest of our games from here on out,” Easthampton coach Molly Jacobson said.

The Tigers controlled play throughout the first two sets, winning 25-18 and 25-13. Using good ball movement, the Eagles bounced back in the third set with a 25-20 win.

Easthampton had a chance to force a fifth set. The fourth set went back and forth and was tied 15-15 at one point. South Hadley stayed one step ahead and pulled out the 25-23 victory.

Senior captain Maddi Kelleher had eight kills and nine digs to pace South Hadley. Junior Meghan Parenteau (ace) had five kills and nine digs, while senior Rachel Dizek added 11 assists.

Junior Amanda Lambert had 11 digs and one ace for Easthampton. Two more juniors contributed to Easthampton’s efforts in the match. Jordan Burt had eight kills, two aces and eight digs while Kate Avard chipped in with seven assists, five digs and five blocks.
