Friday’s colleges: UMass field hockey team beats Maine in season opener
The University of Massachusetts field hockey team opened the season with a 2-1 victory over host Maine Friday.
Nicole Miller and Izzie Delario each had one goal as UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Hannah Prince had one assist.
Sam Carlino made six saves for the win.
UMass 0, Evansville 0 — The Minutemen were outshot 20-13 but pulled out a point in their season opener thanks to nine saves by Nick Ruiz in Peoria, Ill.
Elms 4, Sage Colleges 0 — Victoria Cebula, of Granby, had a goal and an assist, while Hannah Spring, of South Hadley, had a goal and Carmen Marino, of Granby, an assist as the Blazers won their opener.
St. John’s 3, Central Connecticut 1; Colgate 3, Central Connecticut 0 — Cassidy Stankowski, of Deerfield, had 12 kills and 12 digs in her debut, then added six digs and two aces in the Blue Devils’ second game of the Colgate Classic.
