Two pedestrians hurt by cars in Amherst
AMHERST — Two pedestrians were injured, with one needing treatment at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, following separate accidents Sunday.
The first crash occurred at 12:02 a.m. when a pedestrian on South Whitney Street was hit in the leg by a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old Belchertown man, said Police Detective Jamie Reardon.
The injured man was evaluated at the scene but refused transport to the hospital, while the driver fled the scene and was located a short time later at a University of Massachusetts dormitory, Reardon said.
The Belchertown man will be summoned to court on a charge of leaving the scene of personal injury accident, Reardon said.
The second accident was reported at 8:09 p.m. on Main Street in the area of the Jewish Community Center, when a vehicle driven by Livingstone Abali, 62, of Gilbertville, struck Joseph Q. Tran, 68, of Logtown Road, Reardon said.
Tran suffered minor injuries to his face and hands and was taken by Amherst Fire Department ambulance to the hospital, Reardon said.
No citations were issued as police determined the area was dark and Tran was not in a crosswalk.
