Tuesday’s colleges: Smith College edges WPI

Alexa DeJesus scored twice, including the game-winning tally with 40 seconds left as the Smith College field hockey team defeated WPI 2-1 Tuesday in Northampton.

Allie Stein had one assist, while Nora Demick made six saves in the win for the Pioneers (7-7, 1-4 NEWMAC).

Clark 3, Mount Holyoke 2 — Kirsten Kilburn (assist) and Christine Ianni each scored but the Lyons (6-7, 2-4 NEWMAC) fell in Worcester.

Anne O’Byrne made two saves for the Lyons.

Women’s soccer

Clark 2, Mount Holyoke 1 — Kiana Lussier of South Hadley scored and Hannah Yee of Amherst had the assist but the Lyons (2-10-2, 1-6-0 NEWMAC) fell at home.

Mackenzie Randall made 10 saves in defeat.

Smith College 1, WPI 0 — GiGi Ross scored early and Cody Norris made nine saves as the Pioneers (6-7, 3-4 NEWMAC) won in Worcester.

Women’s volleyball

Coast Guard 3, Mount Holyoke 0 — Stephany Yang led the Lyons (3-15, 0-7 NEWMAC) with 14 assists and 13 digs, while Emma Sweeting added nine kills in the 25-14, 25-15, 25-21 loss in New London, Conn.

Springfield 3, Smith College 1 — Blair Bell had 14 kills along with 13 digs, Mei-Li Smith recorded 13 kills, 16 assists, and 12 digs, while Rosa Drummond registered 11 kills, six digs, and four blocks as the Pioneers (6-14, 2-5 NEWMAC) fell 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-16 in Springfield.

Bethany Ashworth finished with 22 assists and seven digs in the loss.

Amherst 3, Simmons 0 — Lizzie Ahern had 12 kills, while Nicole Carter had 25 assists as the Lord Jeffs (11-5, 5-3 NESCAC) won 25-7, 25-13, 25-16 in Boston.

Westfield State 3, MCLA 0 — Stana Wheeler of Sunderland had 31 assists and nine digs as the Owls (7-16, 4-1 MASCAC) won at home.

Angelica Perfido of Whately had seven kills for MCLA (8-15, 1-4).

Women’s tennis

Clark 5, Smith College 4 — The Pioneers (0-6, 0-6 NEWMAC) earned three wins at singles and one in doubles but couldn’t pull out their first win at home.

Clark (6-8, 1-5) snapped a 76-game conference losing streak with the win.
