Tuesday’s high schools: Hampshire boys soccer rolling toward postseason
After getting out to a slow start to the season, the Hampshire Regional boys soccer team is rolling into the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament.
The Raiders, who opened the season 1-3-1, are 6-1-2 since and clinched their tourney berth with a 2-0 win over Southwick Tuesday.
Brendan Bzdel and Joe Larkin scored a goal apiece, with Scott Labrie assisting on both tallies for Hampshire (7-4-3, 5-4-2 Holley).
Tanner Bzdel played a strong game defensively in front of keeper Ben Preston (three saves).
Belchertown 3, South Hadley 2 — Chris Riel scored a pair of first-half goals as the Orioles (15-0, 9-0 Holley) clinched the league title with the win.
Riel’s goals came during a four-minute stretch between the 28th and 32nd minutes when Belchertown scored all three of its goals.
Nate Fournier also scored and Alex DeSantis chipped in a pair of assists.
Nate Cardova put the Tigers (8-5-3, 4-3-3) on the board and Ryan Dickinson converted a penalty kick to cut the deficit to one with 10 minutes left.
Zach Parsons made four saves in the win, while Eric Maryea stopped 12 shots in the loss.
Monson 1, Easthampton 0 — Brady Parker made 15 saves in the loss for the Eagles (1-12-2, 1-9-1 Schmid) at Williston Northampton.
Nick Aubrey played well on defense against the first-place Mustangs (12-1-1, 9-0-1).
Sci-Tech 8, Smith Vocational 0 — Josh Harriman (nine saves) and Will Ingram (six) each played a half in goal in the home loss for the Vikings (1-12-2).
Smith Academy 4, Mohawk 0 — The Falcons (14-2, 10-0) clinched at least a share of the Franklin League title with the home shutout.
Nicole Gay scored twice for Smith, while Ali Fitzgerald and Hannah Rickert added one goal apiece. Hannah Sassi, Anna Gelotte, Olivia Hanson and Sara Pawloski each picked up an assist.
Brooke Pashek made a pair of saves in the win.
The Falcons travel to Athol tonight for a 6:30 matchup needing a single point to win the league outright.
Granby 4, Hopkins Academy 0 — Brooke Labrie (assist) scored a pair of goals as the Rams (14-0-1, 7-0-1 Pioneer) eliminated the Golden Hawks (6-9-2, 1-6-2) from postseason contention with a win at home.
Julia Gress scored in the first half to help Granby surge to a 2-0 lead at the break.
Kate Desormier also tallied for the Rams, while Rachel Mick and Keira Ellard each had an assist.
Brittany Hauschild recorded the win in net with one save.
Amanda Olson made 10 saves for Hopkins.
Holyoke Catholic 0, Easthampton 0 — The Gaels (7-6-3, 1-5-3 Pioneer) inched closer to clinching a playoff spot in their scoreless draw at home against the Eagles (9-3-2, 5-1-2).
Katie Klejna made 12 saves for Holyoke Catholic, while her counterpart Alyssa Fugiel made five saves.
With three games remaining, the Gaels are a win or tie away from making the playoffs.
Amherst 3, West Springfield 0 — Shannon Hebert scored three goals, while Ashlyn Salvage and Maisy Sylvan each had one assist as the Hurricanes (5-8-2) blanked the Terriers at home.
Nadia Squitero made four saves for the shutout.
Amherst Regional 3, East Longmeadow 0 — The Hurricanes needed a win to earn a trip to their 10th consecutive Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament and senior Athena Donta made sure it happened, leading Amherst to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 sweep of the Spartans on the road.
Donta had 18 kills, seven digs and two aces for Amherst (9-7, 2-5 Eastern).
Haley Parker had five kills, four aces and three blocks. Gracie Frank added a season-high 33 assists, four digs and three aces, while Cassie Long registered 10 digs.
