Weekend planner: Music

The Florence Community Band came into existence 12 years ago this month when Priscilla Ross — a multi-instrumentalist proficient on flute, piccolo and saxophone — teamed up with Mike Flynn to make it happen. Originally known as the Florence Community Marching Band, the ensemble held its first rehearsal at the Florence Congregational Church with 10 members in attendance. Today it boats over 75 musicians from points as far removed as Greenfield, Holyoke, Belchertown and Florida (Mass.) and performs a repertoire ranging from show tunes to classical. On Sunday the band will hold its annual spring concert at 2 p.m. at Northampton High School. “We are funded solely through donations,” Ross said. “There are no dues and our concerts are free, but we do request a donation of a non-perishable food item for the Northampton Survival Center.”
