50 Years Ago
∎ Robert Frost, dean of American poets, died early today at the age of 88. He was pronounced dead at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital at 1:50 a.m. after two operations, a heart attack and three separate blood clots in his lungs since Dec. 3.
∎ Police rushed to the rescue yesterday afternoon when a motorist reported a deer being chased by a pack of dogs across Route 9, near the U. S. Veterans Administration Hospital. The patrolmen could find no trace of the deer and reasoned that it had escaped the dogs and fled across the Mill River.

∎ Former Northampton High School teacher and coach Cy Conner took it easy on his 77th birthday by officiating three men’s basketball games at John F. Kennedy Jr. High School Florence last night. Conner has been a fixture on the local sports scene for more than 40 years.
∎ University of Massachusetts officials have announced that Arthur Hilson will stay on permanently as executive director of the 90-member public safety division after heading the department on a temporary basis for nine months.

∎ Any way you cut it, it’s going to be bad. It could be worse. And it’s possible it could be abysmal. That’s the warning from Mayor Clare Higgins to department heads about cuts in state aid during the next fiscal year.
∎ The Hampshire County Family Network, which runs parent drop-in centers, parenting workshops and other activities, has found a new home. The organization’s advisory council voted Tuesday to have the Hampshire Educational Collaborative become the new lead agency for the orgnanization.
