50 Years Ago

In an odd combination of circumstances, a mirror caused a fire in the living room of the rectory at Immaculate Conception Church in Easthampton this morning. The mirror is a large one located on a plaster wall over a mantel. It apparently broke loose from the wall, dropped onto and ignited wooden matches in a holder located on the mantel.

C. Victor Christenson has received official approval from the state Building Assistance Commission of the plans for the Florence junior high. Christenson is chairman of the School Building Committee. He said the committee “certainly hopes” construction will be under way by early April.

The Northampton Lions Club this week welcomed the first woman member into the organization. After expressing an interest in the group, Leslee S. Nuttelman, 22, of Westhampton Road, was invited to join the group, sponsored by Paul Canton.

Assistant District Attorney Frederick Bartmon today will leave the job he has held for over two years, citing a growing family and inadequate pay as the reason for his departure. Bartmon, 30, will join the Northampton law firm of Vincent, Green, Lipton and White, a group of lawyers specializing in civil and criminal litigation whom he refers to as “my dream firm.”

President Bush said for the first time Thursday he would welcome exile for Saddam Hussein, and a meeting between the president and a top Saudi official touched off a flurry of speculation that a credible effort is under way to offer a haven to the Iraqi leader.

Longtime employee Ann-Marie Moggio was named the Northampton Recreation Department’s new director this month. The recreation commission appointed Moggio, a city native, at its Jan. 9 meeting.
