50 Years Ago

Herman Weisinger of 42 Fort Hill Ter. was elected president of the German American Citizens Assn.for 1963 at the annual meeting of the association. Other officers elected were: Peter Turban Jr.,Treasurer; Emil M.Jaescke, recording secretary; board of directors, Fred Nehring, chairman; Hans Lieberwirth, Fred Wagner and Peter Turban Sr.

Radio Station WHMP today announced that the Northampton Jaycee-ettes will once again provide telephone operators for the annual WHMP Buck-a-Tune program, produced in conjunction with the local March of Dimes campaign.

The new City Council session goes into full swing tonight as councilors will be asked to consider several measures, including requiring annual physicals for all police officers and firefighters, adopting a tougher junk car ordinance, and enabling the board of public works to set sewer use fees.

Plans for a downtown Florence face-lift could be sent back to the drawing board a second time, after construction bids this week came in well over the amount the city budgeted for the work. The project would include moving utility lines underground, constructing new sidewalks,installing new benches and streetlights, landscaping the small park at the corner of Main and Maples streets, and repaving some streets.

Federal undercover inspectors slipped through Bradley International Airport security twice with a fake bomb in carry-on luggage, while one agent passed through with a knife taped to her leg, The Hartford Courant reported in today’s editions. The fake bomb was loosely modeled on an explosive disguised as a radio that was used to blow up Pan Am 747 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.

Peace activists turned out Monday on Interstate 91 overpasses and bridges across the Connecticut River to promote their message on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Demonstrators gathered in the windy, cold weather holding signs opposing a possible war with Iraq and urging peace.
